Bristol Wood Recycling Project repays bondholders

Bristol Wood Recycling Project (BWRP) raised £430,000 in 2019 through a bond on the Triodos crowdfunding platform. The proceeds were used to buy the freehold of BRWP's operating site, helping to secure its future so it could continue collecting waste wood for re-use.   The 2019 bondholders have now been repaid in full, six years after the initial investment.

In 2019 the Triodos Corporate Finance team worked with Bristol Wood Recycling Project (BWRP) to raise £430,000 of investment through a bond offer promoted on the crowdfunding platform. The funds enabled the Bristol based social enterprise to acquire the building from which it operates, securing its future. The funds were raised from around 170 investors and the bonds paid investors annual interest of 4%.

BWRP has for twenty years operated a successful business reclaiming and reusing wood that would otherwise go to waste, currently working with a team of twelve employees and many more dedicated volunteers, collecting the timber from construction sites and other sources, cleaning up the wood at their site in central Bristol, and either making products in their workshops or selling directly to passing trade.

Ben Moss, BWRP Founder, said on its success: “After such humble beginnings it’s hard to imagine that now we would be in this position after twenty years - owning our own property in the heart of Bristol, so we can carry on doing our important work, doing good for people and planet, working together co-operatively - and keeping on putting Bristol on the map for pioneering and progressive projects. The last six years have been another successful chapter in the book of our history and we plan for many more chapters to come!”

Since the funds were raised in 2019, BWRP has continued to grow its operations and hit a milestone 20 year anniversary in 2024. Last year they collected over 680 tonnes of wood waste, and re-used over 30% of what was collected. They operate two workshops on site, one producing wooden structures for recycling boxes, bicycles and more, constructed from upcycled pallet wood; the other workshop produces beautiful and functional household furniture.

Earlier this month BWRP repaid the bondholders in full, six years after the initial investment. The repayment was financed through cash surpluses accrued over the six year period forming a deposit for a commercial mortgage from Triodos Bank.
